Program Summary for Smallville
Smallville tells the tale of a teenage Clark Kent in the days before he was Superman. It is the town where he came from where very strange things started happening with his arrival in a spaceship in the midst of a meteor storm of green rocks. Clark must deal with a variety of individuals given powers by the green rocks, keep his powers a secret, cope with his friendship with a young Lex Luthor, and balance the two girls in his life, Chloe and Lana. The show also shows us how Lex Luthor develops from a friend of Clark's and kinda-okay guy to (presumably) the villain who will plague Superman in his later years.

Episode Summary:
This was the perfect platform to prepare for next week's Absolute Justice. If Clark and Oliver are going to form the Justice League, then it was necessary for Oliver to finally overcome his dark side, and he proved this to himself by the end of the episode (although his lingering self-doubt right at the end was unnecessary and undid much of what the episode set out to establish - if it ain't broke don't fix it, writers! We've had the lesson in Smallville many times before that everyone has a dark side to keep in check, we didn't need another reminder here.)

Whilst the right episode before Absolute Justice, this was the wrong episode to follow Pandora. I couldn't shake the feeling that I had missed an episode in-between. As I feared two months ago, the writers skipped past what happened between Clark and Zod at the end of Pandora, and to agree with another reviewer the confrontational attitude of Clark with Zod seemed to suggest that something had gone wrong between them during this hypothetical missing episode (and Zod didn't do his research properly if he thinks that it was an apple that was eaten from the tree of knowledge - was he using Wikipedia?). Considering that every season has to have some fillers by necessity, why a perfectly good opportunity was missed to create a season arc progressing episode is beyond me.

Still, once we were 5 mins into the episode and all this became apparent, I was able to enjoy a fairly good episode, despite Lois' stupidity in running in a direct path for an arrow to hit her instead of hiding behind a car. (And how Chloe and Clark were able to see Mia in the flesh through the use of a microwave telescope I have no idea - microwave telescopes don't show colour and texture.) Then there's the fact that the revelation in Oliver's back-story of how he sought to further hone his already formidable skills seemed unrealistic and therefore became a glaringly obvious plot device to progress his character for next week's episode. This disrupted the suspension of disbelief required for any fictional narration and one would think the writers could have come up with something better to achieve the same objective. Oh well.

It's interesting to see Chloe and Clark continue to be possessed by their demons; Clark is still not fully embracing his human side, which is leaving him hard and cold in many instances, even with Lois. And Chloe is still unable to admit that Clark made the right decision with Jimmy, which has led her into an arrogant belief that she always knows better than Clark. Both characters need some humility to balance out their new found purposes in life.

Overall, I think the only reason I gave this episode a 7 was because it had been so long since the last Smallville episode that almost anything would have satisfied. And it wasn't a bad episode when you ignore the usual Smallville plot holes and intellectual insensibilities, but just one that will be quickly forgotten.

Episode Summary:
Due to problems beyond my control, I could only see the episode from the funeral scene onwards. I have to say, I was somewhat impressed by just that little bit I saw.
The culture of the Kandorians was represented with the funeral. It was fascinating and different enough without looking cheesy. The music chosen for it was even better. The funeral also made me wonder, just how many Kandorians are left? Surely a guy as smart as Zod would know you need a certain controlled population if you would want to continue the race.
Then came Clark finally doing something ballsy and fried the tower. You could tell on Zod's face that a line had been crossed by young Kal-El.
Didn't see anything about the gem K-rock and that may have been a good thing I am guessing.
